If you just watched “Due Date” you found something that might put you in such of a curiosity: medical marijuana to treat glaucoma. What is glaucoma? And how should marijuana taken to treat such? Keep reading!

Glaucoma is the damage of the optical nerve with the increasing of the eyeball pressure (IOP = Intra Ocular Pressure) as the result of it. There are two types of glaucoma: open and closed angle type. Apparently, glaucoma is the number one cause of the blindness cause in Unites States, and number two in Indonesia. Open angle or chronic glaucoma is the most found type of glaucoma among the patients, thus it progressively cause the blindness. In 1970, a research found that marijuana can decrease the IOP those of glaucoma patients. Eventually, NEI (National Eye Institute) continued this research in 1978, created derivatives of marijuana into oral administration and showed some significant result of the decreasing of IOP.

But, since the using of marijuana is still illegal so it is not suggested that any chronic glaucoma patient to consume it as the sole treatment. Obviously, there are many legal treatments from drug administration to the eye surgeries. However, the side effects of marijuana are more dangerous than the main effect to the eye. So if you have a glaucoma, never hope that your doctor would prescribe some marijuana!
