Ethnic Background has Major Effect on Alcohol Death Risk

Can the drinking habits of different ethnic groups have a significant effect on death rates?
It seems so, according to a study published in the journal Alcohol and Alcoholism. The research concluded that a native-born Scot has double the risk of an alcohol-related death as compared to someone who lives in Scotland but who was born south of the border with England.
Also, people born in Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland have double the risk of dying of an alcohol-related death as someone from England or Wales. And Welsh or English males are 64 per cent less likely to die of alcohol-related causes than a male from Scotland.
The data was assembled between 2000 and 2005.
The results showed similar death rates between Scots of both sexes and Irish people of both sexes. Native Scots also have about the same rates of alcohol-related deaths as people born in India. But, Pakistani-born males were 72 per cent less likely to die from this cause as Scottish-born males.
Another study, conducted by the National Health Service, found that Scottish adults consume 25 per cent more alcohol then other British adults. There was a link found between alcohol consumption in Scotland and the price per drink. More than three-quarters of all alcohol sold in Scotland costs less than 50 pence per unit. That is just over 80 cents Canadian.
This has led the Scottish government to propose minimum prices for alcoholic beverages in the hope of reducing consumption. A large part of the above statistic is that most Scots prefer drinking at home rather than in a pub. This would make it much cheaper for them to drink.
It’s not easy to see how the minimum price experiment would make a significant difference given that the minimum price being proposed is just 45p or 73 cents.
UK Alcohol Death Rates Skyrocket
Another troubling statistic is that alcohol-related deaths in the UK have more than doubled in the 15 year period ending in 2006. The main culprit is cirrhosis of the liver, which is also more prevalent in Scotland.
Officials are looking at these statistics with an eye to tailoring strategies to suit particular ethnic groups. The figures also lend some insight into where alcohol abuse treatment programs might be improved or made more available.
