The 12 step method

The 12 step method is not only about stopping substance use, it’s also about how to live life without substance dependency or removing obstacles in your way.  Sometimes it is just unhappiness that places us in despondency.

People are unhappy when things are not going their way in life, when someone is not satisfied with certain aspects of their lives.  Maybe it is not even about drugs, it could be anything other than drugs, maybe a relationship, maybe a friendship, maybe something you feel guilty about, whatever it is, could drive you to substance abuse, so before it gets there, you can attend a 12 step meeting which is free of charge, many people refrain from getting help because they don’t have the money to seek help.

The codes of the 12 step are the codes to life, it is a model for self change, and you don’t have to have an addiction problem to benefit from the 12 steps.

What does the 12 step entails?  This is how I view the steps and also in regard to obstacles in the way, hopefully I can help some people because I know it is difficult for some people to comprehend.

The first step is to admit that you have become powerless over an addiction and that your life has become unmanageable.

The second step is to believe that you can overcome your addiction or obstacle.

The third step is to stop feeling sorry for you by not dwelling on the problem at hand, surrendering to God by forgiving yourself.

The fourth step is to look inside you to distinguish your likes and dislikes, as a result of finding you.

The fifth step is to honestly and openly realize all the wrongs you’ve done, in other words, be humble.

The sixth step is to realize a self change is necessary, now that you’ve accepted who you are, you can work toward change.

The seventh step is to face your weaknesses and make a positive change to things you did not like; this is a chance to put your priorities in place by learning from your mistakes.

The eight and ninth step is to list all the people you’ve hurt during your addiction and think about facing them apologetically, not just something to do but sincerely mean the sorrow, you do this by taking responsibility for your own actions.

The tenth step is to keep looking within and admit whenever you’re wrong and trying to be careful not to relapse.

The eleventh step is to search through prayer, for meditation is prayer and prayer is study and thought and as you meditate you will become more aware of you and your passion for life will surface.

The twelfth step is to be heartfelt, when you are sincere you actually find God in a true sense, and when you find God in a true sense, it is where you see your path in life, your passion and desire surfaces more and you realize that it is a will of God’s, there must be something you’ve always wanted to do or maybe from this experience you can create the opportunity to help another.

So even if your problem is not substance related, it still has become an obstacle and an obstacle is anything that hinders your life, so your experiences can always help someone else.
