Recovery
In order to accomplish recovery, you have to change certain things in your life that you did before and look closely at the high risk situations such as relating with certain people who were involved with your using, certain places where you used and things that are associated with using, coming in contact with any of these situations could work against recovery.
There comes a point when even recreational substance users are fearful of becoming addicted, but because it is recreational, the danger of tolerance is hard to see at that distance until it begins to form a habit, like let us say every Thursday, then it moves to every Thursday and Friday and before you realize the pattern, it has become almost everyday, I think money is a factor with these type of equations, if money was available all the time, it would definitely be a daily use.
Someone asked me the other day, what is the difference between her, who is a functional substance abuser and her mate, who is a non functional substance abuser, meaning he does crazy things like stealing to get his use and as a result winds up in jail, goes to rehab, comes out and does the same thing again, why, because everyone he knows, his so called friends and acquaintance are all users or dealers, so his recovery is almost impossible, and moving is not an option especially when you have no where else to go and you are with someone who lives in an low cost housing home. I told her it was her stability that is the difference, but nevertheless she is still a substance abuser.
This couple independently has reached out to me because they claim that I am the only person around who can answer their questions and speak logically to them and help them understand what they are going through. The woman feels trapped and has many issues which I can happily say I’ve helped her sort through some of them. Although they are a couple, she feels very lonely because she feels that her mate is not responding to her the way she wants him to respond, its difficult because his mind is wrapped around the substance.
There are only a few reasons why people use drugs and alcohol and those reasons are to escape some reality, relax from the stress of life’s expectations and to reward themselves, mainly to relieve tension. Because we as a society are so tensed all the time we forget to relax, but relaxation is the key to recovery. Taking time out, meditating, yoga are all good ways to relax , it should be part of your daily routine, like a new mother, when the baby is down for his/her nap, she’s supposed to relax also at that time.
There are different things one could do in order to change one’s lifestyle. Think about what you’ve always wanted to do and do research, maybe go back to school, involve yourself with positive people who can guide you to something progressive. There are all kinds of resources available for all kinds of need. Most important of all keep attending a support group from the rehab centers, they are all over the city.
