Recovery journey

Once a successful intervention is over, the recovery journey for the whole family is underway.  Many families will think it is over now that their loved one is safe and in treatment but it continues for the family as well because it is important for the family to help keep their loved one focus during the treatment process.  Sometimes an addicted person may want to leave the treatment early justifying why they should leave, the team members have to remain firm and make their love one stick it out, and after all, this is the plan.  Even if the treatment center makes recommendations, the family should support the recommendation.

There is a family program intended for families of addicted people, most treatment centers have family programs.  Whenever possible, each member of the intervention team should be committed and attend the program.  It’s like being addicted yourself, but it is the best form of support where you can show example, people learn by example.  Another thing that can be shown would be love through action, there is no greater love than one who would lay down his life for another.  When your love one see what you are doing for him/her and realizes that you don’t have to go through what he/she is going through, surely it will make an impact on his/her recovery.

Where children, who are often silent victims of substance abuse, are involved, it is very important for them to receive care as soon as possible, there should a program for children along with your program, if not ask for an outpatient therapist who specializes in the area with children of substance abusers.

It is very important for the addicted person to see the family taking action and working on their own recovery process.

In case of a relapse, the family should start over the process again and remain committed, the road to recovery will not be an easy one but commitment and determination will see it through.  One day at a time, day by day, for there are many obstacles along the way, jump over the obstacle one by one, and you will see the entire negative gone.
