To someone who is an alcoholic or in active drug addiction, the idea of recovery seems like a mystery. When you’re life is in freefall, how do you turn it around? How do you find the will to turn it around?

And yet, tens and hundreds of thousands of people have done just that. And many of them were alcoholics and addicts of the most hopeless variety.

The paths that they took were varied. What works for one person won’t necessarily work for someone else. But there are common threads that run through many stories of recovery. These are things that have been proven to be an essential part of the process of starting a new life.

Change is always a bit scary. Sometimes it’s a lot scary. But there are ways to begin the process of change that can make it seem more attainable.

How do we know which approach will work? One excellent way is to listen to people who have overcome their addictions. What did they do? How did they face the obstacles that came up along the way?

On this site we’re going to try and help you to begin this process. We will tell you stories of real alcoholics and addicts – what they faced and how they began to climb out of the hole they created for themselves.

By presenting these stories, we’ll provide an example of how it’s possible to recover no matter how deep a bottom you might have hit. There are people out there who have been where you’ve been. And they are happy to share any insights they’ve gained through their journey.

Each week we’ll share a different story of recovery with you. The names of the individuals will be changed as will any details that would identify them. But it’s not the details that will provide an example to others on how to recover. It’s the way they found recovery that’s important.

Some will talk about being saved when they made their way into some kind of drug treatment program. Others will talk about getting involved in a 12-step program that helped them to find a spiritual solution to their problem. (*It is important to note that the recovery experiences recounted in this regular feature are not a substitute for professional medical advice.)

Regardless of the route people took to find recovery, they have something to teach all of us.

We are not alone no matter how much it may seem that way at times. There is hope for a much better life, if we’re willing to reach for it.
