How can an alcohol rehab help you beat addiction

Addiction can destroy lives and tear families apart. And they can leave financial and emotional wreckage in their wake. And it may seem, when things are at their lowest, that there is no hope and no way back.

But whether you're a drug addict or an alcoholic, there is hope. Those who have become alcoholics can choose to seek help in an alcohol rehab. These facilities seek to arrest the alcoholics' downward slide and put them on the road to recovery.

Stopping alcohol - if you are used to consuming large quantities - can be dangerous unless it is done with medical supervision. In some cases, the first step is to stabilize the client physically. This may involve sending them to a separate detox facility to deal with the short-term withdrawal that the client will have to experience.

But once the detox process has been completed, the alcoholic is then ready to begin the recovery process in an alcohol rehab. This is often the first line of defence in battle against substance addiction.

On the other hand, some alcoholics are capable of entering the alcohol rehab directly and proceeding with their treatment without the need for a detox.

What is an alcohol rehab?

The term alcohol rehab is short for alcohol rehabilitation, which is what the facility aims to do with its clients. There are generally two primary types of rehabs. One is an in-patient facility. Clients live on site for a period of time, remaining abstinent from alcohol.

The first step is that they receive the basics like good food, physical activity and a supportive environment to begin their recovery. Living in this kind of safe and controlled environment creates the conditions necessary address their addiction.

In the alcohol rehab, in a caring atmosphere, they learn skills for living sober. They receive individual counselling and group therapy. And often the alcohol rehab program will include some form of behaviour therapy. This work helps the client identify problem behaviours and begin learning how to modify those behaviours.

The alcohol rehab or treatment centre creates a safe refuge where the healing process can begin. The goal, besides abstinence, is to help the client to live a more balanced and happy life.

Among the activities that are intended to help in this direction is relaxation and meditation. Using techniques for relaxing the body and mind, the client is given further tools in learning how to attain the balance they desire.

Some alcohol rehab facilities use the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous as the basis for their program. This program offers a spiritual approach to recovery, and has been successful in millions of cases over the past several decades.

Other alcohol rehabs use a behavioural approach using Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). Some use a combination of the two, while others use CBT and refer clients to outside meetings of AA.

Whatever the approach, the alcohol rehab has as its goal to help the alcoholic recover from their addiction and to return to a productive and happy lifestyle.
