A rehab is the best way to start getting sober

There are several elements that go into getting sober.

But what experts will generally agree on is that the first step to getting sober is to recognize that one has a problem. Once the addict has admitted the problem to themselves that they can’t control their substance use then they can take the first step to recovery.

That first step – once the problem has been recognized – is generally to reach out and ask for help. This could mean going to a 12-step meeting or it could mean seeking treatment for getting sober. And the best place to seek treatment is in a drug or alcohol rehab centre.

These centres come in two forms: in-patient and out-patient. The advantage of an in-patient facility is that it enables the addict or alcoholic to stabilize their living environment so they can begin the process of recovery. They can begin getting sober once they have good nutrition, a regular sleep schedule, shelter, and a supportive structure that will help them to see the positive side of getting sober.

In addition to solidifying the addict’s living routine, the rehab facility can also begin providing therapy, both individual and in groups. This can involve exploring some of the feelings that have led to, or contributed to, the need to drink or use.

Once the addict begins to understand some of the emotional mechanisms that have contributed to their addiction, they can begin the long process of getting sober.

Besides the therapy, treatment centres will also often incorporate an educational element to the process. The person getting sober gets the opportunity to learn about the chemical process involved in addiction.

They learn about how the brain is affected by various substances. And they come to understand the importance of eliminating these substances. Only once the drug or alcohol is out of the picture can getting sober become possible.

The main reason for this is that it is only possible to understand the nature of one’s challenges once the influence of the substance is removed. At this point it will become possible to look at the emotions you are experiencing apart from any substance use.

Having an addiction to a substance like alcohol or drugs can have complicated causes. And the debate as to whether the factors are genetic or environmental will go on for a long time. But at least once you have started getting sober, you can begin seeking those long-term solutions.

Have you decided that getting sober is a step you are ready to take? If you have made this all-important realization, then you are ready to take action. Consider whether this will involve selecting a treatment facility. This is usually the most effective way to begin the recovery process.

And in the years to come, it will be necessary to continue to work at recovery. Getting sober is just the first step in what will be a lifelong process.
